Malaysians are so informed and familiar with the land grabs in Sarawak and its Taib Mahmud.

However, land grabs have also been taking place in Johor for decades and it is ongoing. Only, now it has become more blatant.

The BN government would abuse, exploit and use the Land Acquisition Act 1960 to freeze the prices of parcels of land eyed by its well-connected cronies to facilitate the gazetting of acquisitions. The prices are always very much below market value.

PENGERANG, Sept 30 — The sleepy hollow of Kampung Sungai Rengit came alive this morning with animated chants and blares from portable air horns as green-clad protesters streamed in by the bus loads to rally against a RM60 billion petrochemical project that will see thousands of villagers lose their homes and livelihoods.

KOTA TINGGI: More than 3,000 people gathered at Pengerang, Johor today for the Himpunan Hijau Lestari Pengerang rally against a massive petro-chemical plant, with some local residents bringing ancestral photographs to the scene.

Clad in green, the protesters started to gather at Dataran Sungai Rengit since early morning, to the backdrop of a huge lobster statue at the square entrance.

By the time the rally began at 10am, the squre was packed with protesters holding placards that read, among others, “Don’t wait until our villages are pawned”, “Taiwan treats it as rubbish, we take it as treasure”, “Defend sustainable Pengerang”.

PETALING JAYA: Sime Darby's wholly-owned unit Sime Darby Engineering has entered into two separate non-binding memoranda of understanding (MoU) with Petroliam Nasional (Petronas) and Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings (MMHE) for the proposed disposal of assets in the oil and gas division.

Sime Darby's president and group chief executive Datuk Mohd Bakke Salleh said in a press release Friday that the company has decided to focus its resources in areas where it already has or could achieve sector leadership.

Bakke said the MoUs involved among others the disposal of the Teluk Ramunia fabrication yard to Petronas for a provisional disposal price of RM296 million and the Pasir Gudang fabrication yard to MMHE for a provisional disposal price of RM399 million.

He added that the provisional disposal price of RM695 million was above the RM641 million book value of the assets as at March 31, 2011.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), perbadanan petroleum nasional Malaysia, akan meluluskan lebih banyak lesen tahun ini untuk membangunkan medan minyak marginal bagi memperkukuh pengeluaran minyak mentah dan gas, yang seterusnya akan merangsang pertumbuhan sektor minyak, gas dan tenaga (OGE).

Pengerang di Johor yang dianggap lesu, hari ini menyaksikan kira-kira 200 orang mengadakan bantahan terhadap rancangan Petronas untuk menubuhkan sebuah kilang petrokimia bagi projek pembangunan hab industri minyak dan gas penapis gas di pekan itu.

Datuk Chua Jui Meng (Johor PKR Chairman), Hassan Karim (Johor PKR Deputy Chairman, Steven Chong and Jimmy Puah, a lawyer by profession, gathered at Pengerang, Johor for a dialogue with the residents on March 16, 2012.

Jimmy Puah explained the Land Acquision Act 153, and guided the landowners in the finer details. He said that by now Borang A is being exhibited at the Land Office. With Boring B the Land Office officers will come over to measure their land.

Later Borang C, Borang D and then finally the landowners will be served with the Borang E.

He said if the landowners are not happy with the compensation figure they can contest their cases at the Johor Bahru high court.

Jimmy Puah stressed that with the Refinery and Petroleum Intergraded Development (RAPID) project, in the near future their sea will no longer be blue and their sky will be black.
