Police will form a special committee to investigate various police reports received on the Petronas Refinery, and Petrochemical Integrated Development Rapid project, in Pengerang, Johor.

Johor Police Chief, Datuk Mohamad Mokhtar Mohamad Shariff said, the committee, led by the acting state CID Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Akhir Ishak, will be investigating all the reports under the Penal Code.

"As of today, 45 reports have been received from various parties who are dissatisfied with the project, which include protests on the project itself. There's also reports over the distribution of leaflets," said Datuk Mohd. Moktar.

Datuk Mohd Mokhtar added, police would act accordingly over the matter and warned those concerned not to do as they please as well as to respect the laws of the country.

He also said police would also be looking for certain parties which had spread leaflets containing false information that could sabotage the project.

Among the content of the leaflets, were on the Lynas rare earth refinery project in Gebeng, Kuantan, which were distributed by certain quarters, allegedly to frighten the Pengerang residents.

The high-impact project, launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on May 13, is expected to draw RM120 billion in investments, turning Johor into a premier centre for oil, gas and petrochemical industries globally.
