JOHOR BAHARU, May 21 (Bernama) -- MCA's central committee has yet to receive a report about 10 members of its Pengerang division allegedly quitting the party on Friday, said MCA vice-president Senator Gan Ping Sieu.
"Johor MCA has been asked to look into the matter. We need more information before the CC can discuss this," he told reporters after opening the Johor-level 1Malaysia oratory competition (Non-Malays) organised by the Johor Information Department in collaboration with Kolej Selatan at the college here today.
Chinese newspapers had reported that the 10 resorted to the action allegedly because Pengerang MCA paid no heed to their concerns about the development of a refinery complex in Pengerang.
They were also reported to be unhappy that residents of Kampung Sungai Kapal would be resettled to make way for the project.
Gan, who is also Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, however, confirmed that the 10 members did not object to the compensation amount that would be paid for resettling but that they were unhappy to be uprooted.
Shailaja Damodaran, 26, an English teacher at Sekolah Menengah Tun Habab, Kota Tinggi, emerged as the champion of the competition.
She took home RM1,500, a trophy and certificate and will be representing Johor at the national-level competition of the same in Kuala Lumpur in July. P. Rajarajeswari emerged as the runner-up while V. Kalaiselvi took third place. Besides a trophy and certificate, they also took home RM1000 and RM500 respectively.
Gan gave away the prizes to the winners. Also present was Johor Information Department director, Hamdan Hasnan.
