KUALA LUMPUR: MCA has urged residents in Pengerang affected by the construction of an oil and gas refinery complex to use the right channel to air their views.
Party deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the Government viewed issues pertaining to the Refinery and Petrochemicals Development (Rapid) project seriously and would want to give the right compensation to the residents.
“We will ensure that their views are heard,” he told reporters after attending MCA's symposium on the national education blueprint here yesterday.
Party Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, who is the Ayer Hitam MP, said many of the protesters did not understand the matter fully.
“I agree that the relocation of settlers must be done properly, and it appears that most of them have already been compensated,” he said.
“But that area already has a lot of big vessels on its waters. If we don't industrialise that area, it will only mean that we will lose out to Singapore.”
Environmental non-governmental organisation Himpunan Hijau held a demonstration on Sept 30, protesting the RM60bil refinery in Kampung Sungai Rengit.
With opposition figures in the rally, they claimed that nine fishing villages would be affected by the complex.
